The paperwork every parent should have
Guardianship, beneficiaries and where everything lives.
Nobody likes thinking about it, but a few documents protect your children if something happens to you. Most families can get started in an afternoon.
Checklist
- A will that names a guardian for your children
- Beneficiaries on bank, retirement and life insurance accounts, checked and up to date
- Life insurance if others depend on your income (compare options independently)
- A list of accounts, bills and passwords kept somewhere safe that a trusted person can find
- Copies of birth certificates and Social Security cards stored securely
Getting help
An estate planning attorney can advise on your situation. Some employers offer legal plans, and legal aid organizations can help families with low incomes.
