A family budget that survives real life
Pick a simple method, plan for kid costs, and review it monthly.
A budget is just a plan for your money before the month starts. With kids, the plan has to bend: growth spurts, field trips and surprise birthday parties are normal, not failures.
Pick one method
- Every-dollar (zero-based): give every dollar of take-home pay a job before the month starts
- Percentages: a rough split between needs, wants and savings, as a starting point you adjust
- Envelopes or separate accounts: one pot per category, so you can see what's left
- Any method works if you actually use it; simple beats perfect
Build it
- Start with take-home pay, not salary
- List fixed bills: housing, utilities, insurance, phones, debt payments, childcare
- Add everyday spending: groceries, gas, household, kids
- Add irregular costs as monthly amounts (see our sinking funds guide)
- Add savings goals
- If it doesn't balance, adjust wants first, then look at the big bills
Keep it alive
Spend 20 minutes once a month comparing the plan with what really happened, and adjust next month's numbers. A family money meeting makes this a habit.
