Ways to lower childcare costs

Options to compare, and tax breaks to ask about.

6 min read

For many families childcare is the biggest bill after housing. There's rarely one easy fix, but comparing options and using the tax breaks you qualify for can help.

Options to compare

  • Licensed centers and licensed family childcare homes
  • Before- and after-school programs run by schools or community groups
  • Nanny shares with another family
  • Shift-swapping or co-op arrangements with trusted families
  • Public pre-K or Head Start where available

Tax breaks to ask about

  • The federal Child and Dependent Care Credit for work-related care costs
  • A Dependent Care FSA through your employer, if offered
  • State credits or subsidies for childcare in many states
  • Limits and rules change, so check IRS.gov or a tax professional

Ask your employer

Some employers offer backup care, discounts with providers or flexible schedules that reduce paid care hours.
